Old Manipuri Song | MANIPUR IN 1930s | Thabal Pharaba | Samu macha Ama
The origin of the Manipuris is obscure. Of the several
tribes in the valley the Meitei seem to have obtained the supremacy, and have claimed a Hindu descent since their conversion to Hinduism. Their traditions, customs and language show that they have descended from the surrounding hill tribes, and no from a Tartar colony as Captain Pemberton supposed. Their records are barren till 777 A.D. when Samlong, a brother of the ruler of the Shan Kingdom of Pong which embraced in its limits the whole country between Ava (Awaa) and Assam, Kubbo (Kabow) and Yunan, andexacted obedience from Assam, Cachar and Tipperah (Tripura), and held the Shan Chiefs in the Kubbo valley as tributaries- visited the valley and excusedtheir paying tribute on account of their proverty.
